About Costa Verde Express

Costa Verde Express saloons are delights of railway heritage, some of them being original 1923 Pullman cars. All the carriages have been specifically renovated and decorated for these luxury trains.

The Costa Verde Express is an evocative way to travel through the rich landscapes of northern Spain between Bilbao and Santiago de Compostela in either direction. Along the way, regional cuisine, art, monuments, coastal views and landscapes are presented from the comfort of a 'train hotel'.

The itinerary makes Costa Verde Express a unique mode of transport for this less-visited part of Europe.

Costa Verde Express Suite

Each 6sq.m. cabin has a double bed, 1.35m wide x 1.85m long (4ft 5ins x 6ft 1in). During the day, the bed becomes a sofa.

Large curtained windows, luggage space, mini bar, safe, wardrobe, writing desk, telephone & carpeted. Individual control of air-conditioning, heating, music and lights.

Private bathroom with hydro-sauna turbo-massage steam shower and hair dryer.

Saloon Cars

Costa Verde Express has saloon cars dating from the 1920s, exuding memories of more relaxed travel.

The elegant Dining Car serves an a la carte and buffet breakfast every morning as well as fine chef-prepared dining for those dinners or lunches served on board.

The Bar Car is permanently open; here you can sit back and enjoy a quiet drink whilst reflecting on the passing scenery.

Other carriages include the Tea Saloon, the Panorama Coach and the Entertainment Saloon, a small night-club with entertainment every night.

There is a library with newspapers and magazines; DVDs and television are available on board.

Itinerary 2026

Bilbao – Santiago de Compostela

Bilbao, Laredo, Santoña, Santander, Santillana del Mar, Llanes, Arenas de Cabrales, Bulnes, Oviedo, Gijón, Luarca, Ribadeo, Taramundi, Viveiro, Santiago de Compostela

6 days/5 nights. 10:00hrs check-in at Bilbao - La Concordia station.

Saturday: Bilbao – Laredo – Santoña – Santander. Reception at 10:00 at Bilbao–La Concordia station. Presentation of the crew and settling in on board. Panoramic tour of Bilbao and visit to the Guggenheim Museum. Lunch on board while the train travels to Treto. By coach, visit the old town of Laredo followed by a boat ride across the bay to Santoña and a visit to an anchovy cannery. Rejoin the train and continue to Santander for a panoramic tour and dinner in a local restaurant. Overnight in Santander.

Sunday: Santander – Santillana del Mar – Llanes. Breakfast on board as the train arrives in Cabezón de la Sal. Coach excursion to the medieval town of Santillana del Mar and the Altamira neo-cave. After lunch, return to the train and continue into Asturias, arriving in Llanes. Visit Llanes, then dinner on board and overnight in Llanes.

Monday: Llanes – Arenas de Cabrales – Bulnes – Oviedo. After breakfast, depart by coach to Arenas de Cabrales and visit the Cabrales Cheese Cave–Museum. Continue to Poncebos, where the famous Cares River route ends, and take the funicular up to the village of Bulnes. Lunch on board while the train travels to Oviedo. Guided tour of Oviedo. Dinner and overnight in Oviedo.

Tuesday: Oviedo – Gijón – Luarca. After breakfast, visit Gijón, a lively coastal city, with free time and lunch in Gijón. In the afternoon, rejoin the train to travel to Luarca. Visit Luarca, then dinner on board and overnight in Luarca.

Wednesday: Luarca – Ribadeo – Taramundi – Viveiro. While breakfasting, arrive in Ribadeo. Continue by coach to the Oscos region to visit the Os Teixois ethnographic complex, Taramundi village and the knife museum. Lunch in Taramundi. In the afternoon, return to the train and travel to Viveiro. Visit, dinner and overnight in Viveiro.

Thursday: Viveiro – Ferrol – Santiago de Compostela. On the last day, while breakfasting, arrive in Ferrol. Farewell to the crew and coach transfer to Santiago de Compostela. Guided visit of the city and lunch. End of the journey at around 16:30.

Santiago de Compostela – Bilbao

Saturday: Santiago de Compostela – Ferrol – Viveiro. Reception in Santiago de Compostela at 10:00. Guided visit of the city and lunch. In the afternoon, transfer by coach to Ferrol to board the Costa Verde Express. Presentation of the crew and accommodation on board while the train travels to Viveiro. Visit, free time, dinner and overnight in Viveiro.

Sunday: Viveiro – Ribadeo – Taramundi – Luarca. Breakfast on board while arriving in Ribadeo. Coach excursion to the Oscos region to visit the Os Teixois ethnographic complex, Taramundi village and the knife museum. Lunch in Taramundi. In the afternoon, rejoin the train and travel to Luarca, the “White Town of the Green Coast”. Visit, dinner and overnight in Luarca.

Monday: Luarca – Oviedo – Gijón – Llanes. Early departure from Luarca. After breakfast, travel by coach to visit Gijón, with free time. In the afternoon, continue to Oviedo, capital of Asturias, for a guided visit and free time. At the end of the afternoon, rejoin the train and travel to Llanes. Dinner on board and overnight in Llanes.

Tuesday: Llanes – Arenas de Cabrales – Bulnes – Cabezón de la Sal. After breakfast, coach excursion to Arenas de Cabrales and visit of the Cabrales Cheese Cave–Museum. Continue to Poncebos and take the funicular to the village of Bulnes. Lunch in Arenas de Cabrales. In the afternoon, visit Llanes and then travel by train to Cabezón de la Sal. Dinner and overnight in Cabezón de la Sal.

Wednesday: Cabezón de la Sal – Santillana del Mar – Santander. After breakfast, visit the Altamira neo-cave and the medieval village of Santillana del Mar. While having lunch on board, the train travels to Santander. Visit of the city, free time and dinner in a traditional restaurant. Overnight in Santander.

Thursday: Santander – Santoña – Laredo – Bilbao. During breakfast, the train advances to Treto. From there, coach transfer to visit Laredo’s old town, then a boat ride across the bay to Santoña and a visit to an anchovy cannery. Finally, the train continues to Bilbao. Lunch in a local restaurant and end of the trip at around 16:30 at La Concordia station.

The Costa Verde Express is available for private hire or exclusive charter for up to 46 passengers.

Use the Costa Verde Express for business or pleasure trips, conferences, incentives, product presentations or or as a film / movie / TV location.

General Information

Included. 5 nights' accommodation on Costa Verde Express; 6 buffet breakfasts on board; 6 lunches & 6 dinners on board or at restaurants; high quality wines, liqueurs, coffee and tea with meals; accompanying hostess throughout the journey; multi-lingual guided excursions with a luxury coach for transfers and visits; musical performances, entertainment and all entrance fees; on-board activities; bathrobes, slippers and a bag of toiletries provided.

Not Included. Gratuities; drinks other than at meals; laundry - advised on the train.

Important Information About Entry To Sites Of Interest

All reservations made on RENFE LUXURY TRAINS must include the passenger's TELEPHONE NUMBER, EMAIL and PASSPORT/DNI NUMBER

If there are incidents with clients as a result of not having this information, the Travel Agency and/or the Passenger will be responsible for not providing it on booking.

Payment terms. Deposit payment 15% of total price to reserve a Costa Verde Express cabin. Balance payment 85% at least 35 days prior to departure. In Euros: Prices are per person. Club discount based on total price is deducted from the balance payment.

Cancellations. You may cancel the reservation and be refunded, minus 15% of the total payable fare, as registration and reservation guarantee fee, which will increase as follows: Cancellation between 30 and 15 days: 25% of the total; Cancellation between 14 and 05 days: 50% of the total; Cancellation between 04 and 01 days: 80% of the total; Cancellation with less than 24 hours or failure to turn up: 100% of the total. You will be liable for any bank and currency costs incurred by us related to the refund to you.

Amendments. Changes are only allowed for the same season / year. Changes are free (except for €60 Club admin) if requested more than 120 days before the departure. Changes between 120 and 31 days in advance: 10% of the total. No changes are allowed on the date of the trip less than 31 days before the departure date. If, after changing the reservation, you cancel it, the expenses will be the 100% of the total.

Dress Code. Smart leisure wear for the day with comfortable walking shoes. Smart casual for the evening. Gala night (on the train) can be a dressier occasion.

Luggage. There is limited storage space inside the cabin for luggage storage. Soft-topped luggage is easier to store.

Wi-Fi is free on the train. However, it is unreliable when the train is moving and best used whilst the train is static overnight at stations.

Electrics. 220 volts with Type F round 2-prong plug outlets.

Unforeseen events/changes. Itineraries, routes, departure points and times may change at any time for reasons outside the control of the train company. Every effort will be made by train staff to minimise any impact; neither the Luxury Train Club will not accept responsibility for any changes. The Club aims to keep itineraries as up to date as possible. Please note itineraries are as notified to us by Renfe.

Child Policy: Children up to 4 years old travel free but do so under the tutelage and full responsibility of an adult. They must always be covered by the adult travellers' travel insurance. Renfe allows children under 4 years of age to travel in the Suites, Rooms or Compartments of the Luxury Trains always accompanied by an adult and to make use of all the onboard services of the train. Any off the train expenses such as lunches, dinners, tickets and visits must be borne by the adult companion.

In double occupancy, the adult companion pays single supplement and travels with the child.

Children over 4 years old pay 100% of the adult price.
