Fay says, 'Nostalgia meets iconic meets authenticity in Pullman Rail Journeys, with modern facilities. Stepping aboard this wonderful train transports one back to a Golden Age when rail travel was the height of sophistication. Remember Cary Grant and Eva Marie Saint in Hitchcock's 'North by Northwest'?
About the Train
The original Pullman rail company started service in 1867 and finally went out of business in the 1980s. These vintage 1940s cars have been rescued and fully restored to the original Pullman Art Deco design, with stylish plush accommodation that features modern amenities to maximize comfort, thus enhancing every moment of your journey without compromising authenticity. Pullman Porters and Stewards clad in traditional uniform are on hand at all times to give superb service.
The authentic rail cars highlight and celebrate Pullman of the 1940's and 1950's. This version of Pullman never featured opulent furnishings nor large expanses of paneled walls. The bright, painted metal surfaces, powder blue and gold upholstery and mid-century style are rather like a classic 1950's Chevy. Service standards are drawn directly from the books of that time and menus are taken from originals of the period. For example, pickled watermelon is found among the crudités on the dinner table and original recipes of the Illinois Central for salad dressings are featured
These authentic yet comfortable Master Room cabins used by Pullman Rail Journeys have a full sized double bed that sleeps two. In some, the bed folds into the wall for daytime occupancy allowing room for two folding lounge chairs. The Master Room also features a private bathroom with a shower and wardrobe. Bathrobes and toiletries are provided. The attention to original detail extends to the specially woven towels.
Bedrooms can accommodate one or two passengers, depending on the room and car. Below you will find full descriptions of how Pullman accommodates one or two guests in Bedrooms. One Guest in a Bedroom: During the day, a comfortable and stylish sofa oriented across the room adorns this accommodation. The sleeping arrangements fold out from the wall behind the sofa at night to reveal a soft bed. Two Guests in a Bedroom: There are two styles of bedrooms that can accommodate two guests in this class of service. Pullman cannot guarantee which type of configuration will appear on any given date. Both styles are upper/lower berth configurations. Style One: Two lounge chairs accommodate day time seating. The lower berth folds down from the wall at night. The upper berth is stored in the ceiling and accessible by a small ladder. Style Two: A large sofa oriented across the room that comfortably seats two passengers folds down to reveal the lower berth. The upper berth then folds up above that, accessed by a small ladder. Each style of bedroom has a private toilet in an annex located inside the room. Depending on the car, some rooms have the sink inside the annex, some sinks are just outside, but still within the room.
A Roomette is designed to comfortably accommodate one passenger. It features a half-length sofa oriented across the car for daytime use. The bed folds into the wall behind the sofa when not in use. This class of service has a toilet in the room with an upholstered cover as well as a sink that folds into the wall. Shower facilities are conveniently located close to these accommodations. Use of the shower facilities can be reserved with your Pullman Porter, or on an as-available basis. This option is economical for the individual traveler.
Lounge/Observation Car/Dining Car
Comfortable seating to afford the maximum vista through a wall of windows is the highlight of the Observation Car/Lounge Car. This is a marvellous place to sample cocktails whilst watching the landscape pass by.
The food on Pullman Rail Journeys is prepared daily on board and passengers are served three elegant meals. Menus can include filet mignon with Madeira wine sauce and the great American breakfast. All drinks are included in the price and are prepared to order by a steward. Light meals and snacks are available from the buffet in the Club and Lounge Cars. The Club car remains open throughout the trip. Snacks are available there, as well as chips, nuts, crackers, fruit, etc. An overnight light menu including sandwiches, soup and salads is also available.
