About The Grand SuitesEach Grand Suite has a double or twin bedroom, a living area with private dining space and a sofa which can be converted into an additional bed. The private en-suite bathroom has a shower, unique washbasin and toilet, plus bespoke amenities and complimentary bathrobes. The 24-hour cabin service includes complementary champagne in the Grand Suite. Orient Express carriages were displayed at the 1900 Universal Exhibition in Paris. It was then possible to buy and design your own Orient Express car to be attached the the train. “Inspired individuals would purchase their own carriage and task designers with transforming them into beautiful and opulent spaces that were uniquely theirs,” Pascal Deyrolle, General Manager, Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, reveals. “The Grand Suites are a re-imagining of this tradition. We’re going back to our history to create something that feels revolutionary.”
The three new Grand Suites have their own carriage. Each Grand Suite is uniquely designed to reflect the spirit of the city they are named after. Paris, stylish and fiercely republican but always aware of Versailles. Venice - La Serenissima - is about calmness and artistic wealth, a refuge. Istanbul, exotic testimony to centuries of fused cultures. The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is already well-known renowned for art deco interiors, formal dining and cocktails in the bar to the sound of the piano. These Grand Suites provide an extra tier of luxury. They have double or twin beds, marbled en-suite bathrooms, private dining and limitless champagne. The Grand Suites are works of art in themselves and are the work of authentic maîtres artisans. Pascal Deyrolle is clear, “Silverware should be heavy, a door handle should be heavy, a crystal glass should be heavy... That’s the way luxury has always been.” Glass Basins and LightsVerrerie du Marais is a glass-blowing workshop near Riom, France. Nicolas Diverchy is the carftsman who trained in France and Sweden. Nicolas has created unique glass basins and delicate light fixtures for the private bathrooms of the Grand Suite Luxury Train. “The quality is not in the time, but in the process”. Nicolas explains, “With the twists and the layers, it’s like capturing motion.” A fitting metaphor for the world’s most romantic journey. MosaicsMosaicist Jérôme Clochard of Absolut Mosaique is an expert in the restoration of ancient mosaics. He has previously worked on The Palais Garnier and Opéra-Comique in Paris, as well as the Belmond British Pullman. Materials including marble, onyx, Venetian granite and Italian glass are cut to small sizes called ‘tessels’. Then Jérôme carefully works them into the template he has drawn, adding them upside down in a method called ‘indirecte’. When he is happy, they are placed and sealed to make them strong and water tight. “It’s a fascinating project and a beautiful professional relationship,” he smiles, “We’re both working to bring a gem to life.” Marquetry
Philippe Allemand is responsible for the marquetry, one of the Grand Suite Luxury Train’s most striking and memorable features. His relationship with the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express began in 1997, when he was commissioned to restore one of the sleeper carriages. The marquetry process is incredibly delicate. To add to the luxe feeling, Philippe sticks to exotic woods. Each layer of wood is shaved to a thickness of between 0.6 and 0.9mm. “Each 3cm of marquetry could contain between 8 and 10 individual elements. Therefore each large panel can contain several hundreds or thousands of pieces,” Philippe explains. His work is visible in almost all aspects of the Grand Suites, including the walls, cupboards, beds and doors. The French Art of Tea'Tea for two' in the Grand Suite of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is much more than a teapot with two cups on a tray. Sample your choice of twelve types of leaf tea, savouring the delicate aromas and subtle nuances of taste alongside delicate patisserie.
