Itinerary Royal Scotsman Highland Survival Adventure30 June 2023 - 3 July 2023 Day One: Edinburgh Board the Royal Scotsman at Edinburgh Waverley Station and depart early afternoon. Go west through Falkirk, reaching Craigendoran. Enjoy afternoon tea as you look out for a first glimpse of Loch Lomond. Soon afterwards, the train begins a hard climb up Glen Falloch, known for its impressive array of waterfalls. Continue north past Crianlarich, the Bridge of Orchy and spectacular Rannoch Moor to the village of Spean Bridge, where the train stables for the night. A splendid dinner is served, followed by entertainment in the Observation Car. Day Two: Fort William After breakfast, you’ll be collected by your guides. It's a short drive to the Achnacarry Estate, famously known as the training centre for Churchill’s Commando Force in World War II under Lord Lovat. Learn about the area’s flora, fauna and history, before testing your mettle on a typical Commando assault course on the original site. From here it is a bumpy drive down a beaten track to the drop-off point where the wild and immersive journey will commence on foot. As a team, you will plot a new route, in true expedition style, to reach the Druim Gleann Laoigh ridge line, reading the ground in order to find the safest direction up. From the top, reap the rewards of the magnificent glen and River Mallie below, which will reveal the next challenge on the journey ahead - the descent. Your expert guides will teach you how to navigate the terrain in order to find the best route to the glen below before then crossing the river to reach the safety of the stalking track. This will lead you towards the rise of campfire smoke and the enticing smell of lunch, hosted at Invermallie Bothy. Relax and enjoy a wild lunch prepared by amazing chef, Tom Byrom, who has worked in fine dining restaurants across the world. With a love for foraging, he now specialises in cooking over fire, using seasonal and local produce to bring flavour, flare and fun to the great outdoors. The adventure is not over just yet. After your energy-recharging lunch, your guides invite you to the shores of enchanting Loch Arkaig, a hidden gem, 12 miles long, fringed with woodland and open hills. You’ll blow up your packraft and then strap your bag to it to commence the next phase of the action. As a fleet, you’ll paddle to Eilean Loch Airceig, a ‘treasure’ island with a ruined chapel dedicated to St Columba, rumoured to be where a vast stash of stolen French gold coins is buried. After searching for signs of what is also known as the Jacobite Gold, we’ll embark on the final leg of the journey, heading west to the River Arkaig, the extraction point of our wild adventure. From here, return to Spean Bridge to reboard the train for hot showers, perhaps a nip or two of whisky and a delectable dinner on board. Day Three: Wemyss Bay After a leisurely morning on board, you’re collected by your guides for the second part of your adventure expedition. The action will commence at a secret wilderness location, where you have the option to abseil down a beautiful cascading waterfall to the bottom. You will be rewarded with a wild swim in the mystical plunge pool and greeted by a warming campfire. The team will pour you a beverage while you enjoy an interactive demonstration on survival techniques, the art of wild cooking and the methods of cooking over fire. Enjoy an outdoor feast before returning to Wemyss Bay in the early evening to rejoin the train for a final cosy, lavish night on board. Day Four: Edinburgh Wake up with serious bragging rights about the rugged, remote Scottish adventure you've just completed and the survival skills you’ve mastered. You'll have time to reflect on all your experiences as the train makes its way back to Edinburgh. Please note: Royal Scotsman operates within the constraints of the railway network.
